On 9th October, Liz, Jozie and I - members of the UWE marketing society 2013/14 - kicked off the year by attending the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s South West Charity Conference at Bristol Zoo Gardens. Held in the Clifton Pavilion conference centre. The full day event covered a range of practical essentials for professionals with charity marketing and fundraising responsibilities.
Topics included;
• Digital and social media fundraising strategies
• Integrating marketing communications
• Engaging stakeholders in marketing activities
• Crisis Communications – taking charge of the media
• Hints and tips on what makes a grant/funding application successful
Our day started off assisting the host of the event, Rachael Baker (Head of marketing communications at St Monica Trust and ambassador for the charity sector at CIM) when we compiled the event information packs for the day, before helping out with registration. The packed schedule included a high-profile line-up of experts from the field, who addressed the 40 strong audience with an array of interesting and motivational presentations.
The line-up included;
• Professor Ian Bruce CBE, FCIM, Vice President, centre for charity effectiveness at City University’s Cass Business School
• Clare McDermott, Head of Marketing; RNLI
• Becky Steeden, Social Media Manager; RNLI
• Vicky Browning, Director; Charity Comms
• Owain Cassidy, Head of Marketing and Development; Bristol Zoo Gardens
• Emma Beeston, Grant Manager; Lloyds TSB foundation
• Eryl Jones, Manager Director; Equinox Communications
The event allowed us to network with marketing professionals from recognised organisations, learn more about the topic of charity marketing and even take away some practical cases for use in our university coursework and dissertations. For example, the RNLI provided a fantastic insight into their creative marketing communications and social media strategies. In addition to the influential range of speakers, we managed to incorporate a trip to the brand new Gorilla enclosure inside Bristol Zoo! Overall, the day was a huge success and was a fantastic opportunity to meet and interact with such a variety of significant professionals in marketing.
